Italy: Life expectancy in the country has dropped by the coronavirus for almost a year

The life expectancy fell in Italy by almost a year to 82.3 years due to the pandemic, the National Statistics Office (Istat) announced today.

THE Italy was one of the countries hardest hit by Covid and the first in Europe to be affected by the first wave. This week it surpassed the barrier of 100,000 deaths.

Estimates for 2020 “indicate a sudden cessation and a significant reversal of the positive trend in recent years in terms of life expectancy,” according to Istat.

The areas in the north of the country most affected by the virus are also the ones where life expectancy fell the most: in Lombardy, the engine of the country’s economy, it fell from 83.7 to 81.2 years.

Before the pandemic, life expectancy had risen from 81.7 years in 2010 to 83.2 years in 2019.

According to Istat, the EU average was 81 years in 2018, a year for which the latest data are available.

In its report, Istat also highlighted the country’s ‘digital’ inhomogeneity, one of the issues expected to be addressed under the Brussels-funded recovery plan.

One third of households in Italy do not have a computer or Internet connection and 24% of the population have not used the Internet in the last three months. At the same time, “regular Internet users” increased from 44% in 2019 to 70%.
