A migrant woman gave birth this morning on board the non-governmental organization Geo Barents ship Doctors Without Borderswhich had taken her to the Mediterranean with her three sons.
“Despite the happy event, her condition is serious and requires specialist medical attention,” the organization said on Twitter, asking Maltese and Italian authorities to urgently organize the transport of the woman and her children.
The young woman, whose identity has not been released, had on Monday night boarded a “unstable» boat who left Libya with 90 other people. The birth was caused by “the difficult journey, harsh conditions, stress and dehydration”, according to MSF and as relayed by the Athens News Agency.
Italy has seen a significant increase in migrant arrivals by sea since the beginning of the year, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior: since January 1, 96,816 people have reached its shores, compared to around 63,000 last year and 32,000 in 2020.
Most of these migrants were rescued by the Italian coast guard, but Rome has sharply criticized rescue operations by ships chartered by various non-governmental organizations.
