The prosecutor’s office of Palermo, Sicily, today requested the referral of the secretary of the League, Mateo Salvini, for deprivation of individual liberty to immigrants.
The case concerns Salvini’s decision in August 2019 (when he was Minister of the Interior of the Conte government) not to allow, for a week, the disembarkation of 147 migrants and refugees off Lampedusa, on a ship of the Spanish non-governmental organization Open Arms.
The Palermo prosecutor’s office requested that I be brought to trial for deprivation of liberty. The sentence is fifteen years in prison. If I am worried? Not at all “, wrote Salvini, on social media.
The Public Prosecutor of Palermo has asked for indictment and trial against me for kidnapping, 15 years in prison the foreseen penalty.
Worried? Not really😊.
I am proud to have worked to protect my country, respecting the law, waking up Europe … pic.twitter.com/4jQ0jRQDSI– Matteo Salvini (@matteosalvinimi) March 20, 2021
In Sicily, hearings on this whole case are still in their infancy and journalists have not been allowed to be present.
