Italy: Pope Francis meets with Hungarian Prime Minister Orban

Pope Francis received Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the Vatican today.

According to the Holy See, the meeting lasted 40 minutes and the pope thanked the Prime Minister of Hungary for the hospitality provided by his country to thousands of Ukrainian refugees.

“I’m glad to see you. You have the blessing of the Lord, you and your country,” said Francis.

As many commentators point out, the Holy See’s relationship with Orban is not one of the warmest, due to the Hungarian government’s well-known position on immigration.

In the last period, however, after the reception of refugees from bloodied Ukraine in Hungarian cities, the distances seem to have decreased, at least to some extent.

The Hungarian Prime Minister finally met with the Secretary of the League, Matteo Salvini. The main topics of discussion were the economic relations between the two countries, the war in Ukraine and the strengthening of their political cooperation.
