Two Italian priests have been arrested on charges of sexual assault after staging a burglary to steal their victims’ cellphones and destroy the evidence, the Naples prosecutor’s office announced today. The investigation had begun in April, when two residents of Afragola, a community near Naples, said they were the victims of theft. But the perpetrators only took one mobile phone and left without finding the second one. The two men immediately linked the incident to the sexual assaults they received from the priests at the institutions they worked at, the prosecutor’s office said. The authorities investigated the case and it was revealed that such attacks were being committed in several monasteries, including the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Afragola.
