Italy announced 81 coronavirus-related deaths on Sunday, up from 144 the previous day, according to the health ministry, while the daily report of new cases fell sharply as trials fell over the Christmas weekend.
According to Reuters, after three consecutive days with a record number of cases, the Ministry of Health said that only 24,883 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours, from 54,762 previously.
It should be noted that only 217,052 coronavirus tests were performed on the last day, compared to 969,752 performed on Saturday, the health ministry said.
Italy has recorded 136,611 deaths linked to COVID-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic last February, the second-highest death toll in Europe after Britain and the ninth-highest in the world. It has reported 5.65 million cases to date.
The number of patients admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 – excluding those in the intensive care unit – amounted to 9,220 on Sunday compared to 8,892 on Saturday.
There were 85 new admissions to intensive care units, up from 106 on Saturday. The total number of patients admitted to intensive care units increased to 1,089 from 1,071.
