In a statement released on Friday, the Italian coast guard said it had rescued 305 migrants trying to reach Europe aboard an overcrowded boat that ran into difficulties on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa.
Two coast guard units arrived at the boat, which was about 20 miles off the Italian coast. Among those rescued are 17 women and 6 minors.
The operation was particularly complex given the vessel’s small size and concerns it could capsize due to the excessive number of people on board, the coast guard statement said.
Italy has seen an increase in the number of migrant boats in recent months, and hundreds more people rescued in the Mediterranean are currently aboard three charity boats waiting for safe harbor.
Doctors without Borders (MSF), which operates the Geo Barents, said on Twitter that it was transporting more than 430 people rescued in several different operations.
