Italy: Salvini refers to 147 refugees for deprivation of liberty

The Palermo court in charge of the preliminary investigation decided to refer the Lega secretary to trial, Mateo Salvini, for deprivation of individual liberty of 147 immigrants and refugees.

The case concerns the occupants of the ship of the Spanish NGO Open Arms, who were forced to wait a week, before disembarking in an Italian port, in August 2019, due to the refusal of Salvini (who was then Minister of Interior) to give the necessary “free” .

The trial is set to begin on September 15. Recently, the secretary of the League, underlined via the internet:

“Am I being prosecuted for defending my country? So I will go to court, with my head held high, on behalf of everyone. ” Salvini’s firm position is that the entire government of then-Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte shared his position and that he had called for clear commitments to redistribute immigrants and refugees to EU countries.

The non-governmental organization Open Arms, for its part, wrote on Twitter: “We are happy for the many people we have saved in recent years.” The position of the NGO is that the basic principle of shipwreck rescue has been violated, on the altar of political propaganda.
