Italy sends rejected asylum applicants to the center in Albania

Italy sent 40 asylum applicants who had their requests denied to Albania on Friday (11) to be held until repatriation for their home countries in empty detention centers.

Italy built two facilities in Albania last year with the intention of using them to process asylum requests from migrants rescued at sea, hoping that the initiative would dissuade people to try to reach Italy.

However, the program was suspended after Italian courts repeatedly canceled the transfer of sea migrants, forcing the government to bring them to Italy to evaluate their legal situation.

Facing criticism of the opposition about legal confusion, the conservative coalition of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni decided last month to use Albania as a stopping point for people whose asylum requests have already been rejected.

It is unclear how long migrants will remain in Albania. According to Italian law, asylum applicants who had their request denied can be arrested for up to 18 months while waiting for deportation.
