According to the latest report by the Italian authorities, seven people lost their lives due to yesterday’s detachment of a large layer of ice, in the Dolomite Alps of the Trentino region. Nine people were injured and fourteen are missing.
In the meantime, drones using heat scanners continue to fly over the area to locate any survivors. Members of Civil Protection are particularly careful in their movements, because due to the increase in temperature recorded in recent days, there is a risk of a new detachment of part of the glaciers.
Late in the morning, operations were suspended due to heavy rainfall in the area. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi went to Trentino, but did not fly a helicopter over the area of the tragic event, so as not to delay the search for the missing. A while ago he declared that “the government of Rome must be concerned and act, with the aim of preventing other, similar tragedies from happening again”.
“Our country is mourning today,” said the Italian prime minister, immediately after his meeting with the relatives of the victims. Finally, the mayor of Trento, Franco Iancelli, asked meaningfully: “should we limit ourselves to a fatalistic attitude or immediately do everything we can to deal with climate change and limit the increase in temperature?”.
