Italy: Strong reactions after an incident of police brutality against a transgender woman

It has caused strong reactions in Italian society amateur video showing policemen to hit with globes and spray pepper spray a transsexual woman in Milan.

The video, taken by a tenant of an apartment building located near the city’s Bocconi University, quickly went viral and angered netizens and due to their reactions and the prominence of the issue by the Italian media, the police announced that they were conducting an internal investigation.

According to “La Repubblica”, the woman is a 41-year-old transgender from Brazil. In the meantime, the Italian media reports that before the episode, the transsexual was in Milan’s Trotter Park, where some parents of school students reported the presence of the trans woman “in an obvious state of psychophysical disorder and that he was harassing people and trying to undress”.

The same sources state that the 41-year-old woman was escorted to the patrol car, bound for a local police station more than five kilometers away, where she started kicking two police officers when the vehicle stopped, and then tried to escape.

It also became known that the woman was sued for resisting a police body, the incident caused severe reactions. Milan Mayor Bepe Sala spoke of a “serious case”, and Senator Ilaria Cucci, sister of Stefano Cucci, a young man killed in 2009 while in police custody, announced she would bring the case to the attention of the Italian Parliament .
