Italy: The 294 migrants rescued by the Ocean Viking in the Mediterranean will disembark at the Sicilian port of Pozzalo

The ship Viking of the non-governmental organization SOS Mediterranee, which has gathered 294 migrants in the Mediterranean, received permission from the Italian authorities to dock in the port of Pozzalo in Sicily, it announced last Sunday night.

“After an exhausting wait, we were finally informed that we could safely disembark the 294 survivors on the #OceanViking in Sicily, ((…). It is unacceptable for the survivors to be treated with such contempt for their rights,” he said in a statement. on Twitter the European Maritime Search and Rescue NGO, based in Marseille.

Since May 19, Ocean Viking, which operates with the help of the International Federation of National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has carried out four rescue operations during which it has collected 296 migrants off Libya and Malta. Among them are 49 minors, including a three-month-old baby, and six pregnant women, according to SOS Mediterranee.

An 8-month-old pregnant woman and her husband were forced to leave the ship on Sunday.

In a video taken on the ship, a doctor said that some of the migrants show signs of the violence they suffered during their stay in Libya, while others were injured during their voyage or suffer from chronic problems and illnesses for which they have to take medical assistance on land.

Libya is an important transit country for the tens of thousands of migrants who try to reach Europe every year via the Italian coast, which is about 300 kilometers from the country.

The central Mediterranean is the most dangerous migration route in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This UN agency estimates at 1,553 the number of migrants who have lost their lives there this year.

Since February 2016, SOS Mediterranee has rescued 35,630 women, men and children aboard the Aquarius and then the Ocean Viking.
