In Italy, the campaign to administer a second booster dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 to citizens over 60 will soon begin, the country’s health minister announced yesterday Monday, after receiving a “green light” from the health authorities of the European Union.
The EU recommendation comes amid concern over rising cases and hospital admissions across Europe and is expected to influence member states’ decisions to speed up vaccination campaigns, which have slowed in recent months.
Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said the government had already given the “green light” to the 20 regional administrations to start the campaign to administer a second booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, following the positive opinion of the national medicines agency (AIFA).
“All the scientific evidence … shows that the extra booster dose can largely protect people, especially the frail and the elderly, from needing hospitalisation,” Speranza told Rai.
Italy recorded an increase in coronavirus cases in July. Last week the number of daily infections exceeded 100,000 for the first time since February and hospital admissions of Covid-19 patients are also increasing.
