Italian Culture Minister Dario Francescini unveils plan to cover his underground spaces Colosseum and the re-creation of his arena. The total cost is close to 18.5 million euros and the project is expected to be completed in 2023. Francescini stressed that this is a project “sustainable, with the possibility of returning to the current image of the amphitheater and which is based on the help of high technology.”
The new arena will have an area of three thousand square meters and for its creation will be used wood and carbon beams. Thanks to a state-of-the-art control system, these beams will be able to be moved from the horizontal position in a vertical position, in order to ventilate and illuminate the basements of the Flavio amphitheater.
The new wooden surface will touch directly on the ancient walls of the monument, a symbol of the Roman Empire. In this way, if in the future it is decided to abolish the arena, it will be possible to get rid of it without particular problems.
The Italian Minister of Culture stressed that with the new intervention, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the Colosseum, as a whole, from the most central interior. The Italian government is also planning large-scale international cultural initiatives.
“It is an intervention that will provoke discussions, because it is the most famous monument in Italy. “But the arena definitely has the ability to combine protection, maintenance and technological advancement.”
