Italy: The center-right wants to win the ‘battle’ for the election of the new President of the Republic

With the formalization of the candidacy of Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian center-right made it clear that it aims to succeed in dominating the process of electing a new President of the Republic.

According to official estimates, the center-right (Lega, Forza Italia and Brothers of Italy) has 451 votes. The center-left and the Five Stars 415. At the same time, 36 MPs and senators belong to the centrist, small party Living Italy, of former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. They have not yet clarified which “camp” they will side with and want to act as a regulator.

58 voters representing the 20 Italian regions are also taking part in the process of electing the new president. In this case, too, the center-right prevails, because it rules 14 districts, ie two-thirds of the total. In total, the large number of eligible voters is 1,008 and voting begins on the 24th of the month.

From the fourth ballot for the election of the Italian president, a simple majority is enough, ie 50% plus one vote. Hypothetically, that is, if the whole center-right really supports, in a tight way, his candidacy, Silvio Berlusconi could be the successor of the current president, Sergio Matarella. Italian politics, after all, is full of surprises and upheavals. However, there are analysts who predict that at the last minute, “Cavaliere” may take a step back and favor the election of a person of wide acceptance.

The center-left and the Five Stars, for their part, insist Berlusconi is a “divisive figure” and call for an agreement on the continuation of the government’s work and the election of a president of general acceptance by all the main political forces in the country. .

Next week the Italian Left, the center-left Democratic Party and the Five Stars will formalize their position after a meeting of their leaders.

The big question is whether their representatives will insist on Mario Draghi’s candidacy for the presidency of the Republic and whether they will be able to convince the other parties as to its usefulness.

As for the course of the wide-ranging governing alliance which – at this stage – governs the country, it must also be seen whether, after Draghi’s departure from the Prime Minister, a replacement with a strong profile can be found or whether the Italy will be led directly to early parliamentary elections.
