The center-right has prevailed since the first round in three of the five largest cities in which municipal elections were held yesterday, according to exit polls by Italian public television Rai.
The conservative faction is likely to elect a mayor in the first round in Genoa, Palermo, Sicily, and possibly L’Aquila in central Italy.
In Verona and Parma, always based on exit polls, the candidates of the center-left, the Five Stars and the Italian Left are leading.
In Catanzaro, Calabria, the center-right candidate has the lead, but everything shows that a second round will be needed, on the 26th of the month.
Overall, turnout in these municipal elections was 54.7%, five points lower than in previous local elections. The count, however, is going to start at 2 noon Italian time.
As for the five referendums that dealt with the operation of the judiciary, they can not be considered valid because yesterday only 20% of eligible voters went to the polls. It was a personal bet of the Lega secretary, Matteo Salvini, who is significantly weakened by this negative outcome of all this effort.
Yesterday, finally, a negative exception was Palermo, Sicily, where in many sections the citizens (especially in the morning) found it difficult to vote, due to the absence of chairmen and members of the election commissions.
