Italy: The immigration problem exists and cannot be solved by ignoring it, said Sergio Mattarella

In their joint press conference, in Catania, Sicily, the Italian president spoke on issues of immediate relevance and in particular immigration Sergio Mattarella and the German counterpart of the Franc Walter Steinmeier.

“There are three issues of primary importance, for Europe and the whole world: the climate, energy and immigration,” emphasized Italian President Mattarella. The two presidents, earlier flew by helicopter and ascertained the enormous damages caused, in the past months, by the widespread fires in Sicily.

The dimension and international characteristics of the migrant have many causes, which are linked to the environment, as well as to violence. As far as this phenomenon is concerned, new and courageous solutions must be found, not superficial and imprecise ones. European solutions are needed which must be seriously deepened by the governments. The ten points of the plan presented by Ursula von der Leyen at Lampedusa are interesting. The immigration problem exists and is not solved by ignoring it, leaving room for action to traffickers“, added the Italian president.

Mattarella called the Dublin regulation “prehistoric” and “unrealistic” and called for “a joint effort to be made, before the migration phenomenon becomes impossible to govern.”

For his part, the German president, referring to the same, always subject, underlined: “We talked about immigration and about strengthening cooperation with the countries of origin. We need to act so that the number of arrivals is reduced, we need European rules. We need common European rules, with respect for the truth, if we want to keep the internal borders of the EU open, we need an open debate to achieve this goal.”
