One of Italy’s most popular attractions, the Leaning Tower of Pisa appears to no longer be leaning as much as it used to, according to research republished by UK-based Mirror.
The tower that became a trademark not only of Pisa but of the whole of Italy within the last two decades has been aligned by 1.6 inches or 4.064 centimeters.
How did they manage to line him up
The four-degree tilt, which gives visitors the impression that the Tower is about to collapse, has at times preoccupied engineers and historians, who have tried to “straighten” or better fix the popular attraction. The engineers, in fact, had succeeded since the alignment work was completed in 2001to “straighten” him by 15 inches or otherwise 38.1 centimeters.
Engineers managed to level it by placing hundreds of tons of lead counterweights at the base of the Tower and removing a lot of soil from the foundations. The conservation organization told Italy’s National Associated Press Agency that “there is not the slightest reason for concern about the situation of the Tower».
Nunziante Squeglia, professor of geotechnics at the University of Pisa, said the previous work helped the tower to align further.
