The seventh ballot for the election of the new President of the Italian Republic begins at this time.
Yesterday, Friday night, the League and the Five Stars had proposed the name of the current head of the Italian secret services, Elizabeth Belloni.
In those few hours, however, this candidacy weakened: their opposition was expressed by Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, the small centrist party Living Italy, but also by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, who controls some of the “five-star” MPs.
The center-left Democratic Party now believes that the most realistic way out is to call on President Sergio Matarella to accept a proposal for a second term.
The manipulations so far show that the attempt of Lega secretary Matteo Salvini to coordinate the negotiations of the center-right with the other political forces has failed. At the same time, both the Conservative faction and the Five Stars face a substantial division within themselves.
The seventh ballot may also be fruitless.
