Italy to hold elections in September after Prime Minister Draghi resigns

THE Italy will hold early national elections on 25 September. The election was called after Prime Minister Mario Draghi resign this Thursday (21) amid a collapse of the governing base.

The now ex-premier’s announcement sent tremors through financial markets.

It will be the first national autumn election in more than a century in Italy, where the second half of the year is normally devoted to passing the budget law in parliament.

Chances are it will be a turbulent campaign.

A bloc of conservative parties, led by the far-right Brothers of Italy, appears to have a clear majority at the polls, an opinion poll released this week shows.

Draghi, who led a broad coalition for nearly 18 months, presented his resignation on the 14th, but was denied by President Sergio Mattarella, who asked the prime minister to seek a new alliance in parliament.

This Thursday, after losing his support base, the prime minister presented a new letter of resignation to the head of state.

“We must deal with emergencies related to the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation and the cost of energy,” Draghi told cabinet colleagues.

He said the government must also implement the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which calls for Italy to use billions of euros of post-pandemic European Union funds in exchange for reforms.

Although the vote is scheduled for the end of September, it could be weeks before a new government is sworn in.

Italy’s coalition fell apart on Wednesday as three of Draghi’s top partners boycotted a vote of confidence he had called to try to end divisions and renew their fractured alliance.
