According to the Speaker of the Parliament Roberto Fico, the first procedure for the election of the new President of the Italian Republic is set for January 24, at one o’clock in the afternoon.
The Italian president is elected by 630 deputies, 321 senators and 58 representatives of the country’s regions. These are, in total, 1,009 large voters. The first three votes shall require two-thirds of the votes cast. From the fourth ballot, an absolute majority is sufficient, ie 50% plus one vote.
According to the Italian public television Rai, this time, due to a coronavirus, the whole process is going to undergo major changes: each ballot can last up to six hours, with the aim of preventing more than 200 voters from entering the Parliament hall at the same time. , at the Montecitorio mansion.
As is well known, the main candidate – according to analysts – is the current Prime Minister Mario Draghi, mainly due to his international prestige.
However, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has also expressed his hopes of moving to the Presidential Palace Kyrinalio. He has called for the support of the entire conservative faction despite his pending court cases. A number of artists and intellectuals, meanwhile, are calling for a woman to be elected president of the Italian Republic for the first time.
But there is another scenario. According to several commentators, the continuous increase in coronavirus cases and the whole state of emergency could lead to a maintenance of the current status quo: with the stay of Mario Draghi as Prime Minister, and with the second term of Sergio Matarella as President of the Republic .
