Italy: What conditions do the Five Stars set to remain in government

Today’s meeting between Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and the president of the Five Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, lasted an hour. The main result of their conversation was that, as Conte pointed out, the Five Stars wish to remain in government, but ask for the adoption and extension of the validity of specific measures. The main ones are the reduction of taxes for employees, the maintenance of social income for the unemployed, as well as the covering of expenses, by the public, for the energy upgrade and maintenance of apartment buildings.

As the leader of the “five stars” himself added, the Italian technocrat prime minister asked to study their requests, promising to give detailed answers in the next few days. “We do not consider some individual support measures of the order of two hundred euros to be enough. We must help both entrepreneurs and workers,” Conte told reporters.

Despite the constructive atmosphere of today’s Draghi-Conte conversation, the issue of Italy’s overall line on the issue of Ukraine remains open, since the movement founded by Pepe Grillo is asking to stop sending arms to the government of Kiev.
