In accordance with Italian Institute of Statistics Istat, from 2005 until today, the number of the country’s inhabitants who are in a state of absolute poverty has almost tripled. In 2005 it was 1.9 million, while last year it reached 5.6 million, i.e. 9.4% of the total population. The families, from 800 thousand, reached almost 2 million.
Living in conditions of absolute poverty it is three times more common in minors in relation to the national average, while among young people aged 18 to 34, the relative percentage reaches 11.1%. In 2005, the corresponding percentage did not exceed 3.1%. The Italian Institute of Statistics underlines, at the same time, that in families made up only of foreign citizens, the poverty rate is much higher and on average reaches 25% of the total.
In the Italian South last year 12.1% of the inhabitants lived in conditions of absolute poverty. The Istat Institute of Statistics, finally, as reported by the Athens News Agency, emphasizes that the social income granted to the unemployed in 2020 allowed one million citizens of Italy not to face great financial difficulties and not to find themselves in absolute poverty.
