The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, said in a statement on Tuesday that Pope Leo XIV confirmed, during a call with her, his willingness to host the next round of negotiations to try to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“Upon finding in the Holy Father the confirmation of the readiness to host the next negotiations between the Vatican parties, the Prime Minister expressed deep gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for his incessant commitment to peace,” said Meloni.
Following a telephone call on Monday between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Meloni’s office said he received Trump’s statements that Leo XIV had expressed interest in hosting the negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, but the Vatican did not immediately confirm such an offer.
Pope Leo XIV, elected two weeks ago, is the first American leader of the Global Catholic Church. In a speech on May 14, he stated that the Vatican could act as a mediator in global conflicts, not specifically mentioned Ukraine and Russia.
In a second separate statement, the Italian Prime Minister said she also talked to other European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the next steps.
“It was agreed to maintain a close coordination among partners with a view to a new round of negotiations aiming at a ceasefire and a peace agreement in Ukraine,” the statement said.
