the president of Italy Sergio Mattarella, rejected this Thursday (14) the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi and asked him to address Parliament to have a clear view of the political situation, said a statement from the office of the head of state.
Draghi tendered his resignation after the 5 Star Movement, a party in his ruling coalition, failed to participate in a vote of confidence in the government.
The vote covered a cost-of-living package worth around €26 billion. It also includes a provision allowing the city of Rome to build a giant garbage incinerator — a project 5 Star has always opposed.
As a result, the party felt isolated by Draghi and his coalition partners and began to argue that the prime minister is not doing enough to help the population economically.
Even without the support of the legend, the prime minister won, but upped the ante by saying that he would not govern without the support of the 5 Stars and presented his letter of resignation this Thursday.
