Italy’s public energy company, ENI, announced today that it has decided to stop buying oil from Russia.
Gas imports so far continue normally. The government of Mario Draghi, however, has said that by the end of June it will have reduced Russian gas imports by 50%.
According to the Italian press, this is a decision that extends to a field that has not yet been affected by the European Union sanctions against Moscow.
The Italian company explained in a press release that it “suspends the signing of new contracts for the purchase of oil from Russia” and monitors developments in the gas sector.
Last week, ENI announced that it was withdrawing from Blue Stream, the pipeline that carries gas from Russia to Turkey. ENI was a shareholder in the pipeline consortium, together with Gazprom.
