Italy’s winter gas reserves at 80%, Draghi says

Italy’s efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian natural gas have made the country less vulnerable to a complete supply cut, Prime Minister Mario Draghi said.

According to him, Italy has reached 80% of its gas storage capacity for the winter and is on track to reach 90% by October.

Speaking in Rimini, on the Adriatic coast, Draghi pointed out that Italy had reduced its dependence on Russian gas from 40% last year to 20%, securing new supplies from countries such as Algeria and Azerbaijan.

According to Italy’s outgoing prime minister, the country could become completely independent of Russian supplies by autumn 2024 if two new regasification (NLG) plants are operational.

“Our aim to diversify away from Russian gas was critical in order to give citizens and businesses greater certainty about the stability of supplies,” Mario Draghi pointed out.
