Itamaraty advises Brazilians to leave the West Bank on commercial flights

Given the escalation of tension in the West Bank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is advising Brazilians who have airline tickets, or are able to purchase them, to board commercial flights to return to Brazil.

For now, there is no plan for a repatriation operation on Brazilian Air Force (FAB) planes. Around 6 thousand Brazilians live in the region, the majority of whom have dual nationality and have a fixed residence.

To leave the West Bank you must use Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, which operates regularly.

A CNN Itamaraty reported that the Brazilian Representation in Ramallah continues to monitor the conflict in the West Bank, where more than 80 Palestinians have already died in clashes with both Israeli forces and settlers.

The West Bank is the Palestinian territory west of the Jordan River, adjacent to Israel and Jordan, and its residents hope the territory will be part of a future Palestinian state.

“Land access points between the West Bank and Jordan remain open, although operating intermittently. Through its social networks, the Representation Office in Ramallah indicates the announced opening times of the aforementioned border posts”, Itamaraty informed the CNN .

On Thursday (19), Ambassador Alessandro Candeas, representative of Brazil to Palestine, said, in an interview with CNN that, although there is no provision for repatriation, there is already a contingency plan for a possible emergency withdrawal from the West Bank.

“We are also concerned about the increase in tensions in Palestine. The villages where they live are all blocked, they cannot pass from one city to another, because of both the Israeli forces in Palestine, and also because of attacks by Israeli settlers”, said the ambassador.

Since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Brazilian Air Force (FAB) aircraft involved in the federal government’s Operation Returning in Peace, were responsible for the return of 1,135 Brazilians, and at least 35 pets (dogs and cats), which were in Israel.

In the Gaza Strip, another 30 Brazilians are waiting for the opening of the Rafah crossing, on the border with Egypt, to return to Brazil. A Brazilian Air Force plane is already waiting for the group in Cairo, the Egyptian capital.
