Itamaraty talks with Guyana and Venezuela about the need for moderation to avoid escalating tension on the border after a referendum in Venezuela approved measures for the annexation of the Essequibo region, which occupies two-thirds of Guyana’s territory.
Brazilian diplomats have already taken action and are talking to both sides so that the tension does not evolve into an armed conflict. There is particular concern about the rhetoric of Nicolas Maduro’s speech.
The current stage, however, does not yet indicate Brazilian mediation, which according to sources at Palácio do Planalto will only occur if there is a demand from both countries. The current phase, in this sense, is one of dialogue.
The Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, told CNN on Monday morning there was still no suspicious movement on the Brazilian side.
“So far everything is normal,” he said.
The information is the same in the Brazilian Army, which anticipated a movement of troops to the region due to the referendum.
