The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Monday (23) condemning Israel’s attacks in Lebanon that left at least 492 dead. The objective of the operation, according to the military responsible, was to destroy weapons that Hezbollah has used or would use against Israeli cities.
“The Brazilian government condemns, in the strongest terms, the continued Israeli air strikes against civilian areas in Beirut, South Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley,” the statement said.
“(The government) also deplores statements by Israeli authorities in favor of military operations and the occupation of part of Lebanese territory and expresses grave concern at calls by the Israeli government for Lebanese civilians to evacuate their homes in those areas,” the document highlights.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Brazilian embassy in Beirut continues to provide support and guidance to Brazilians in the region. According to the ministry, the current recommendation is that citizens leave the conflict area.
The Israeli military on Monday launched its most intense air strikes against what it says are Hezbollah targets in Lebanon since 2006.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the people of Lebanon that his country is not at war with them but with Hezbollah and urged people to “get out of harm’s way.”
The rising tension in the region comes as world leaders gather for the United Nations General Assembly this week in New York.
