The Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinates an operation to remove Brazilians from Ukraine, which is under Russian attack. According to calculations by the Itamaraty, around 500 Brazilians currently live in the eastern European country.
THE CNN learned from Brazilian diplomats that the federal government is waiting for the reopening of airspace to charter planes and train wagons to rescue Brazilians who are in the country, but the costs must be shared by those rescued, with the exception of those who cannot afford it.
The possibility of sending a FAB (Brazilian Air Force) plane for rescue is considered remote. In principle, the Brazilian embassy in Ukraine should only facilitate the withdrawal.
The Brazilian chancellor, Carlos França, confirmed that the Itamaraty is coordinating these works. “We are preparing a contingency plan for the removal of Brazilians. This plan involves contact with neighboring countries. We will only get the Brazilians out of there when we have the necessary conditions for this to happen in a safe and orderly manner.
We’re looking at land convoys, railroads, highways. The airspace is closed, but we are focused,” said França during a live broadcast alongside President Bolsonaro this Thursday.
According to members of the Itamaraty Palace, the alternative being evaluated is for the Brazilian embassy to organize the chartering of an airplane, a bus and a train car to concentrate Brazilians in a single province for repatriation. The report found that, so far, the ministry has already sent R$109,395 to be used for bus rental, tickets and travel expenses.
The contingency plan, according to sources heard by the CNN, predicts that Brazilians will travel by land towards Poland, Moldova and Romania. The honorary consulate of Brazil in Lviv, a city in the west of the country, is also prepared to support Brazilians who have moved towards Poland. The Itamaraty also put the honorary consulates in Kharkiv and Dnipro on alert.
Earlier, Itamaraty reported the difficulty in rescuing Brazilians and stressed that the Brazilian embassy in Ukraine is not in a position to carry out an operation. In an interview with the press, the communication and culture secretary at the Itamaraty Palace, Leonardo Gorgulho, said that at least 160 Brazilians have already registered at the Brazilian embassy in Ukraine.
