Ita Transportes Aéreos, of the Itapemirim Group, canceled 59 flights that left Tom Jobim International Airport, in Rio de Janeiro, in December. The same number of company planes were also expected to land at Galeão in the period. The company claims that the suspension of operations was carried out due to a need for “internal restructuring”.
CNN confirmed that passengers traveling with Itapemirim at Galeão only learned of the service stoppage shortly before boarding. And, therefore, they were not warned about the suspension of operations.
In a national scenario, the company had 513 flights scheduled for December. The flights would depart from the airports of Galeão (RJ), Brasília (DF), Recife (PE), Salvador (BA) and Guarulhos (SP), which registered a confusion this Saturday morning (18), due to a protest by passengers who had their flight cancelled.
“At the Itapemirim window there were no employees. Chaos began, everyone clapping, screaming, asking for directions from the company,” passenger Lidiane Santos told CNN.
She informed that the confusion remained throughout the night in the place. “There was no direction. I managed to board this morning on another airline, buying another ticket. At Itapemirim, there is still no one and passengers continue to block the passage of other companies”, he said.
Sought by CNN, the airport’s press office advised passengers with scheduled flights to consult the airline before heading to the airport. The company, on the other hand, regretted the inconvenience caused and stated that it will continue to provide all assistance to impacted passengers, with “the utmost effort to, soon, resume their flights.”
