Canadian cardinal Marc Outrocers said on Tuesday (6) that the period of imprisonment for the conclave represents a “great freedom.”
In an exclusive interview with CNN Brazil in St. Peter’s Square, in the Vatican, Ouellet spoke about the isolation period, in which the cardinals stay in the Vatican since the eve of the conclave and have no communication with the “external world” for the choice of the new Pope.
“It is a freedom, it is a great freedom. It is a great freedom to be without communication, to be among us, to pray to God and to share, and is therefore a positive experience,” said the cardinal.
From this Tuesday, the 133 cardinals voters are staying at the house of Santa Marta and Santa Marta Vecchia, both hosting houses at the Vatican.
Asked if the experience of running out of contact with the abroad could also be beneficial to the faithful in an increasingly connected world, Ouellet replied: “A retreat from time to time, this is very good for the Christian life, for spiritual life.
Isolation aims to ensure that cardinals move away from the visions of the so -called secular world as they prepare to vote.
Because he was already 80 years old, Canadian cardinal no longer has the right to vote for the conclave. But he participated in the general congregations, hearings that bring together all the cardinals to discuss the future of the Church. Congregations have happened almost daily after Pope Francis’ death.
“It was a very interesting assembly during the ten, 11 days we have been talking. And it’s a great experience of communion, of mutual listening, and I think it will bring a fruitful result to the cardinal body,” said OUELLET.
The Canadian cardinal avoided guessing who the new Pope will be. “The expectation is that we obey the Holy Spirit and thus receive with joy and great confidence the new Pope who is about to be elected,” he said.
