‘It’s almost unexplained’ – What Air Force Specialist says about the only survivor from Air India’s air crash

British Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was the only man to survive the crash of the aircraft in Ahmedabad, India. “This is almost unheard of,” Guy Gratton, Associate Professor of Aviation and Environment at Cranfield University, tells BBC Newsnight. “A modern aircraft is designed to be crashing resistant” which means that “if there is a crash everyone has the best chances of surviving,” he says. Because of this, “we either see a large number of survivors or we don’t see anyone because the accident was so serious. So seeing one is really unusual, “Gratton adds. He says that if he should guess, Ramesh’s seat – at 11A – could have been “launched” by the plane during the crash, with himself still in it, and that he was “incredibly lucky”.
