Many researchers are working on innovations for virtual reality, which has been around for quite some time, but has not yet become widespread. Now, the new X-Rings virtual reality controller has been unveiled and will be showcased at the UIST 2021 ACM Symposium on Software and User Interface Technologies.
X-Rings is described as a gadget that is fixed in the palm of your hand and allows you to change shape. This allows the user to feel virtual objects of various shapes in their hand. At the same time, he is able to determine different pressing force. If, for example, a fragile (virtual) glass is in the user’s hand, then it is quite possible to break it by tightly squeezing the fingers.

Inside the X-Rings, motors are installed that can very quickly change the diameter of the four outer rings from 5.7 to 7.7 cm.The object is fixed in the palm of the hand with a strap, that is, if the user does not want to pick up anything in virtual space, his hands can be relaxed.
In the following video, the developers very clearly demonstrated the prototype in action. Such controllers allow you to more realistically interact with various objects within the virtual environment and provide a greater degree of immersion.
