Who appears in the video is the candidate for federal deputy David Cardoso (PL-SP). The content recorded by him started to be shared as being the artist and has already been denied by other checking agencies and by the author of the video himself.

Investigated Content: Video that circulates on social networks attributes to the actor Fabio Assunção criticism of the Workers’ Party (PT). In the content, a man identified as the artist defends the candidacy for reelection of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and criticizes the left. The video, 1 minute and 57 seconds long, is accompanied by the following caption: “Important message from Fabio Assunção (former PT member)! Watch and go viral!!!”

where it was published: Twitter.

Completion of Proof: The publication on social media in which a man named actor Fabio Assunção criticizes the PT, on the left, and defends the reelection of President Jair Bolsonaro is false. The content that circulates on social networks shows a man with similar characteristics to the artist, but who appears in the images is David Cardoso, candidate for federal deputy for the state of São Paulo, for the Liberal Party (PL).

The original video was posted by David Cardoso on his Instagram account, from where the material was taken for the insertion of the fake caption: “Fabio Assunção (actor and former PT member)”.

After the montage, David Cardoso himself posted a video in which he claims to be “fake news” that Fabio Assunção is in the image.

Falsefor Comprova, is content invented or edited to change its original meaning and deliberately disclosed to spread a falsehood.

Scope of publication: As of September 15, the verified post had 2,500 shares, 5,300 likes and over 130,000 views on Twitter. She was erased but it can be seen in this screenshot via the WayBack Machine tool.

What the author of the publication says: It was not possible to contact the author of the post that went viral on Twitter, as the user does not allow sending messages. The post was deleted from the social network.

How do we check: First, the Comprova team searched for keywords with the name of “Fabio Assunção” + “Bolsonaro” and the query returned reports (Extra, Forum) that already indicated the falsity of the content investigated here and pointed to David Cardoso as the original author of the videos.

On David’s Instagram account, we searched for videos with the same visual elements, like the clothes and glasses. We found the post where he was associated with Fabio Assunção.

Queries were also made for the name of the actor associated with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), former president and candidate for the Planalto Palace. In this research, material emerged (The globe) with the same content, pointing out that it was not Fabio Assunção in the video, and other content that showed the artist’s closeness to the former president, such as a video on twitter in which Assunção congratulates PT on his birthday.

The report also made contact with the press office on Fabio Assunção’s Instagram profile, but there was no response.

Video was recorded by candidate for deputy

Who appears in the images is David Cardoso, candidate for federal deputy for the state of São Paulo, by the Liberal Party (PL). David Cardoso himself posted a video on September 5 in which he clarifies the situation:

The original post was also made on his Instagram, on July 19. The video was removed from the channel and published on social networks with the insertion of the caption “Fabio Assunção (actor and former PT member)”. In this process, the image lost quality, which contributed to reinforce the lie.

Several journalistic sites and verification agencies published content with the same conclusion as Comprova: Fabio Assunção is not in the image (AFP We check, Agency Magnifying Glass, Rumors.org, Extra, Forum Magazine, Brazil 247, Diary of the Center of the World).

To Agência Lupa, Fabio Assunção’s press office confirmed that he is not the actor who appears in the video: “This video is not Fabio. Clearly. Is another person”.

Political positioning of Fabio Assunção

Comprova did not find statements by Fabio Assunção about this year’s presidential elections. However, in 2020, the actor showed support for Dilma Rousseff (PT) by sharing an interview in which she comments the tribute paid by Bolsonaro, then federal deputy, to Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra during the House vote on April 17, 2016 on his impeachment proceedings. Brilhante Ustra was recognized by the Brazilian Justice as a torturer during the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985).

In this ocasion, Fabio Assunção wrote: “Inhumanity does not fit in any ‘caption’. I’m speechless”. And she marked the official profile of Dilma Rousseff, inserting, beside, emojis with the symbol of a heart and a clenched fist.

In 2019, Lula’s official Twitter profile released a video of Fabio Assunção in which he congratulates the former president on his birthday and claims that Lula’s arrest was “a political prison”.

In the previous year, in an interview with Brasil de FatoFabio Assunção commented on the differences between him and the character he then played in the series “where the strong are born”, Ramiro Bullfinch, whom he described as “extremely cruel and conservative”.

“My worldview is completely different. I am guided by two fundamental questions that are the humanitarian principle and this progressive side”, said Assunção.

Already in 2017, the actor joined the PT.

why do we investigate: Comprova investigates suspicious content that went viral on social media about the pandemic, public policies of the federal government and presidential elections. The content refers to Bolsonaro, who is running for reelection, and criticizes the PT, Lula’s party, which is running for the same office. By attributing the video to actor Fabio Assunção, who is known for supporting leftist agendas, as if he had changed his political stance, the author contributes to spreading a falsehood, which affects the democratic process of the elections. The population has the right to make their choices based on true and reliable content.

Other checks on the topic: Elections have been the preferred topic of disinformation content circulating on social networks. This week, Comprova demonstrated that it is false the video that states that soldiers attacked PT members during the September 7 parade and also an audio in which the president curses Michelle Bolsonaro at the same event. Furthermore, it pointed out that a Bolsonaro video criticizing labor rights and that it is satire a video about Lula’s participation in a rally in Belém.
