It’s not so bad: 10 books after which the coronavirus will seem like a trifle

The situation in the modern world is rather sad – the coronavirus greatly complicates our life, in some places radically reshaping the usual rhythm. You cannot easily visit cinemas, restaurants or gyms, it is difficult to communicate with noisy companies of friends or travel the world. And this is even without taking into account serious diseases with a fatal outcome, of course. But there are scenarios (fictional – to our happiness), in which the situation is much more difficult and terrible – now I will tell you about the ten most interesting ones. Believe me, after reading at least one of this book, the hardships and hardships due to the coronavirus will seem like a trifle.

Confrontation

Stephen King

There is no doubt that Stephen King knows how to create unique stories, and he also worked a lot on the topic of viruses. In his novel “Confrontation”, he told an incredible and sometimes horrible story of how a virus created in the form of a biological weapon got out “free”, instantly hitting humanity – only 0.6% of the population remained alive. The planet is literally empty, and those who survived are building new states, dictatorship, fighting with each other, surrendering under the yoke of the new world. Everything is described very vividly, in detail and with imagination, so if you are not afraid of nightmares, then you can safely appreciate it.

Crazy Max

Howard Hines

It’s just an incredibly popular story about the nuclear death of the entire planet, in which Australia by some miracle (apparently due to its geographical location) managed to survive. However, the lack of resources, the fall of global laws and principles, as well as the general atmosphere of the new world have changed the local population. Now nobody needs money – the only currency is gasoline, without which it is simply impossible to survive. And in this whole new world, the author was able to draw an amazing story of the confrontation of an ordinary person with a difficult fate against a whole army of maddened thugs.

Bird box

Mahlerman Josh

Something absolutely terrible, so much so that no one can describe it, wiped out the population of the planet – it is enough to look in the direction of the unknown once to ensure inevitable death. People live in houses with boarded up windows, do not go out for years, raise their children in complete darkness and do not even know what to do next. But suddenly the mother of two children decides to run away – she wants to get to where, according to rumors, one can live freely. But for this you need to go blindfolded on a clumsy boat an impressive path, fighting with horror, fears and the unknown.

Death of the grass

John Christopher

The plot is based on a unique virus that infects only plants – first it destroyed rice crops, thereby bringing hunger to Asia, and then mutated, affecting absolutely any herbaceous plants on the planet. Humanity is starving, no one is interested in any principles, norms and rules of behavior – the novel quite vividly and realistically describes what will happen to humanity, from which most of the food has been taken away. After all, when extinction is on the horizon, people are ready to do anything to get at least a little of a valuable resource. Great layout of post-apocalypse and social drama.

Valley of the Damned

Roger Zelazny

Quite an unusual mixture of the consequences of a nuclear war, global weather disasters and plague that is destroying the rest of humanity. And in the center of the plot is not a standard stereotyped hero who is ready for self-sacrifice to save the whole world, but an ordinary bandit – he drives fast and only because of this he is sent on a dangerous mission to deliver a vaccine from Boston to California. On a land scorched by nuclear bombs, full of horror, dangers, obstacles and moral choice. After all, you can just run away, leaving all the risks behind. Or is it still impossible, if the lives of thousands of people depend on it?

Andromeda strain

Michael Crichton

But what if a virus that destroys all life comes from space? This novel gives a very clear and detailed answer – nothing good. After all, if humanity with difficulty overcomes terrestrial types of diseases and pandemics, then what can it oppose to a representative of the crystalline form of life of extraterrestrial nature, which in the blink of an eye kills any infected? An extremely curious novel with an eye on science fiction, which captivates both the relationship of key figures and the general atmosphere of the inevitable end of the world from where no one expected it at all. So remember – never hide downed satellites!

Child of man

Phyllis Dorothy James

It is not at all necessary to kill humanity with viruses and nuclear bombs – it is enough to make it sterile. This, in fact, happened to the men in the novel – no procreation, no population growth, only pain, disappointment, devastation and the fall of entire civilizations. All this is described against the background of a brutal dictatorship, which, according to the dictator himself, is the only chance to prevent wars and anarchy, as well as a small group of brave men who, as they themselves believe, save humanity’s only hope for survival. The idea is very unusual, as is the implementation.

Day of the Triffids

John Wyndham

Humanity has decided to tame triffids – these are such hefty intelligent plants with a sting that can spit poison and act in concert with their relatives. Why would such people be tamed at all, and not exterminated? All, of course, for the sake of selfish goals. But then a terrible thing happened – after a strange starfall, humanity became blind (almost completely), and the triffids, who used to sit in cages, got out to hunt. They, not surprisingly, love to feast on meat and not only, which means that humanity in the coming years will be oh, how difficult it is. Will our fictional brethren be able to save the situation? There are always chances, of course.

Ten days until the end of the world

Manon Fargetton

The world is doomed – the planet Earth is cracking from incredible explosions, and ten days later it will split into small pieces, sending the remains of civilization into outer space. There is nowhere to run, no one will save, and there is no spaceship for flights to other planets – humanity has only ten days to enjoy life in all its glory. Someone will go to their parents, someone will try to keep their sanity, and someone will have time to believe in love right in front of death. And it is very interesting to watch the development of these destinies, especially if you know how everything will end.

Fireman

Joe Hill

Nothing boded trouble, but suddenly an incredibly dangerous virus arose – it spreads like a terrible forest fire, first presenting the wearer with beautiful black and gold spots all over the body, and then corny burns the infected with no chance of survival. There is no medicine, no vaccine, no escape is impossible, the peddlers are killed and burned indiscriminately. And it seems that everything, the demise of humanity looms on the horizon, when suddenly a certain Fireman appears – he is infected, but does not burn out like everything around. It is only necessary to unravel its peculiarity, its secret, in order to create a cure for inevitable death.
