It’s ‘surprising’ that gunman fired without authorities knowing his location, FBI says

At a news conference, Kevin Rojek, FBI special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh office, said it was “surprising” that the gunman was able to fire multiple shots during former President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

A reporter asked: “It sounds like the police only knew (the shooter was on the roof) when the shots were fired. Is that what you’re hearing?”

Rojek replied: “That is the assessment at the moment.”

“We’re still working through the security apparatus that the Secret Service had in place, what potentially happened,” he added.

“There will be a long investigation into exactly what happened, how the individual gained access to the location and what type of weapon he had. All of this is really days, weeks and months of investigation.”

Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens added that the investigation would allow authorities to “analyze where any failures occurred and what can be done better in the future.”

What happened

Former President Donald Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania, United States, this Saturday (13). After gunshots were heard at the scene, he was removed from the stage bleeding, with an injury to his ear.

According to his spokesman, Steven Cheung, the Republican is doing well.

The shooter, Thomas Crooks, was killed by the Secret Service.

According to Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburg field office, the attacker had no identification on his body, so agents had to “analyze his DNA and obtain biometric confirmation.”

Authorities also reported that at least one audience member died and two other attendees were seriously injured during the shooting.
