“It’s the most precious thing she had”, laments the son of a woman who lost her eye in RN

Civil firefighter Evandro Santos reported to CNN who fell ill and even spoke to a psychologist after receiving the news that her mother, hairdresser Izabel Maria dos Santos Souza, aged 63, would lose her eyeball on the left side after undergoing cataract surgery. The procedure was carried out in a joint effort organized by the city council of Parelhas (RN).

“I was floored. It’s the most precious thing she had, she’s a hairdresser.” lamented the patient’s son.

The procedure was carried out on September 27th, at the Dr. Graciliano Lordão Maternity Hospital. According to the report, Izabel Maria went to a sister’s house and, from the day after the surgery, she began to notice redness in her eye and feel pain.

Upon returning to the doctor from the company responsible for the effort, Oculare Oftalmologia Avançada, the professional said that the symptoms were normal.

However, the discomfort continued and the family decided to take the hairdresser to a private consultation with an ophthalmologist, who identified the contraction of the bacteria Enterobacter cloacae. In addition to her, 14 other people who went through the task force had the same problem. Of this total, eight lost their eyeballs.

Doctors informed family members that Izabel Maria would lose her eye on October 3rd. Since then, the hairdresser has been admitted to a state hospital in the capital of Rio Grande do Norte.

According to the family, doctors kept the patient hospitalized and receiving medication, as the bacteria spread slightly and also affected the elderly woman’s eyelids. There is a risk of the problem reaching her brain.

The Rio Grande do Norte State Department of Public Health is also monitoring the case and clarified that the surgeries were carried out as a result of a contract made by the municipal management, without state participation.

THE CNN contacted Oculare Oftalmologia Avançada, but did not receive a response until the publication of this article.
