It’s time to back up: 5 tips to make no mistake

Prevention is better than cure, we all know this but we often run for cover too late. This is demonstrated by the fact that 60% of Italians lost at least once in their life any data they considered important and 68% regretted not making a copy of their files regularly. That is why the world backup day which has been recurring, for more than 10 years now, on March 31st.

The goal is clearly to to raise awareness on the importance of this good practice, a habit that really requires minimal effort and protects us from consequences that in some cases can be even severenot only because you risk losing important documents forever but also having to stop your work for several days.

A good backup allows us to restore files in case of accidental deletion and becomes a valuable aid if our computer or smartphone should have problems functioning or if we are attacked by a virus or another security threat. Here are 5 simple tips to avoid worries.

1. Make not 1 but 3 copies
Obviously the first rule is to backup and to do it regularly. However, it is better not to limit yourself to a single copy of our most important files (documents, photos, videos, etc …), but do three using three different supports. The first copy, at least of the most relevant documents, can be made directly on our computer, perhaps in a dedicated partition on the hard drive. For the second copy it is good to use an external hard drive, while the third archive should be done using a cloud program. When buying external hard drives, you choose always branded and reliable products (Toshiba, Lacie Western digital, Sandisk), and if possible choose the SSDsolid state drives.

2. Avoid manual copies
Copying and saving data manually is not only tiring and time-consuming, but you also risk forgetting some files or saving outdated documents. Better to rely on dedicated programs who take care of synchronizing data and copying them every time we make a change, all in a totally automatic way.

Many of these software are already present inside the hard disks that you buy just to make the backup but you can also buy them independently by choosing solutions such as Acronis True Image, Paragon Backup & Recovery, EaseUS Todo Backup. In some cases these software also have free versions, for example Mac users can use the called function Time Machine.
