The executive coordinator of the Scientific Committee of São Paulo, João Gabbardo, said that “it is too early to make a decision about next year’s Carnival”, in an interview with CNN Radio this Thursday (25).
“We are advancing gradually, we have to see how the pandemic will evolve, the data from Europe are very worrying, especially those with lower vaccination coverage against Covid-19”, he said.
Gabbardo stressed that immunity drops after 5 or 6 months of the second dose, something that may reflect the European situation. “Hence the need for the booster dose.”
The announcement that the state of São Paulo plans to release the use of masks as of December 11 was defended by the coordinator, who said that indicators, especially for vaccination, point to this.
However, he made the reservation that the protection item “will no longer be mandatory outdoors”, but that people “will still have to carry the masks with them, to enter environments such as supermarkets and markets.”
Gabbardo also recalled that the Committee was afraid to allow the use of masks, due to the message given to people: “We have 15 days to communicate that the mask, outside open environments, remains essential equipment to reduce the transmissibility of the disease.”
