Ivan Reitman, the famous producer and director behind some of Hollywood’s biggest comedies, died Sunday at the age of 75, according to Tom Rothman. CEO of Sony Pictures.
Reitman was behind some of the most enduring comedy films of the ’80s and ’90s, including 1984’s “Ghostbusters,” which he produced and directed. The film was a huge success and launched a franchise that spanned decades, including last year’s “Ghostbusters: Beyond,” directed by his son Jason Reitman.
“Ivan Reitman was an inseparable part of this studio’s legacy, but more than that, he was a friend,” Rothman said in a tweet from the official Ghostbusters account. “A great talent and an even better man; he will be sorely missed. We send his family all our condolences.”
Reitman was also behind classics like “Clube dos Cafajestes,” starring John Belushi, and “Runs of the Dead,” starring Bill Murray, John Candy and Harold Ramis.
Reitman’s directing credits also include “Twins” and “Kindergarten Cop” with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and “Dave – President for a Day” starring Kevin Kline.
He served as executive producer on the 1992 family hit “Beethoven,” its sequel, and the 1994 TV series featuring the beloved St. Bernard.
He also produced “Space Jam” in 1996, which saw NBA legend Michael Jordan teaming up with Bugs Bunny on the court.
Reitman helped produce 2009’s Academy Award-nominated “Love Over the Hill,” starring George Clooney and Anna Kendrick and co-written and directed by his son Jason Reitman.
