The host Oprah Winfrey, 71, was at the Blue Origin base, near Van Horn, east of Texas, to watch the release that led her friend, journalist Gayle King, to space on Monday (14).
During a quick appearance in the online transmission of the space tourism company, Oprah spoke of her friend’s pride. Gayle King is also a host and has been running CBS this Morning since 2012. Check out who else went to the space with Blue Origin on Monday.
“We are friends – it will be 50 years old next year. We have been friends since we had 21 and 20 years old. And I have never been proud of my friend than today,” he said.
Oprah said he saw this mission as “bigger” than just going to space for King, which typically has flight anxiety.
“Whenever we are on a flight, it is on anyone’s lap if there is the slightest turmoil, (with) real anxiety to fly – and that is to overcome a wall of fear, a barrier.”
And although King expressed nervousness to today’s mission, Oprah said, “I think she was never so calm.”
Gayle King, who openly shared her nervousness about today’s mission, said her longtime friend Oprah encouraged her to participate in the mission. She said she thought Oprah would say she wouldn’t go.
But, “she said,” I really think you should do that, because you have talked about it, and when you come back and you are not in it, you will regret it, saying, I could have gone and I haven’t been, and I don’t want to hear about it for the coming years, “King said.
