Ivy Getty, bride dressed in mirrors

A bride dressed in mirrors: can we imagine a more dreamy, romantic and original dress at the same time? The dream turned into (sparkling) reality for the model and artist Ivy Getty, who said yes to her photographer boyfriend Tobias Engel, set in a creation designed by John Galliano – always his favorite stylist – per Maison Margiela.

Just as he expected the only heir to the fortune of J. Paul Getty, the dress lived up to her expectations or rather, her dreams. The «base» was a corset made following the Ivy Getty skin shades and with slightly padded sides, just enough to accentuate the wasp waist effect.

Above the corset of the tulle cut on the bias, a third layer, in white tulle, to create a transparency effect and, finally, to complete the whole, to give that fairytale look: the dress made with pieces of mirror.

The mirror fragments were connected to each other by means of a metal wire, as if it were a kind of jewel. Given the need to walk and move to get to the altar, some of the reflective components of the mirrored dress were made of a material that evoked the real mirror, but weighed much less.

The references behind the wedding dress and the veil? Butterflies, animals, nuts, guitars and dancing elephants, each linked in a certain way to the important people in the model’s life: for example, the dried fruit reminded her of her grandmother, who grew up on a walnut farm, while the guitars symbolized her father – he too, like her grandmother, who passed away in 2020 – a musician.

To get to the definitive effect, three rehearsals were made before the ceremony: a Los Angeles al Beverly Hills Hotel the first, the second at the headquarters of Maison Margiela in Paris, and finally, for the final touch, the most important, John Galliano e Ivy Getty, escorted by several bridesmaids, they met atl Claridge’s Hotel in London.

You know, whoever wants to look a little beautiful must suffer. But if this is the end result, it’s worth every effort.
