Known for her power as a black woman, the artist emphasized that it wasn’t always like this. “From the moment I grew up, at the age of 10, I became a more withdrawn child outside of home. I think I faced racism and didn’t see myself in the places I was,” she recalled.
“My mother is a teacher and I often received scholarships at private schools. And I was the only black person in the class. That was always very cruel. There was no policy or study about what that meant. At the time I didn’t understand it, but later I realized it was because of my skin color,” she added, admitting that the change in direction came as a professional necessity.
