IZABELLA TEIXEIRA: Departure from the US agreement is serious

Former Environment Minister Izabella Teixeira was the guest of the first episode of the second season of CNN Sustainability. For the environmentalist, the US departure from the Paris Agreement “is serious.”

“We are not saying about what is happening today, which is the result of the accumulation of emissions from the past years, but about the future, it is a decision that you compromise the future,” explains the former minister.

Izabella was a minister of the environment when the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015. She participated in negotiations at the conference.

The former minister points out that the United States is the second largest global CO2 issuer, which makes even more worrying the landing of the commitment that seeks to combat global warming.

Izabella also recalls that the United States has made energy security replacing coal with ‘shale oil’, a fossil fuel. The former minister emphasizes that the entire energy matrix of the world, since the Industrial Revolution, is based on fossil fuels. And asks, “Are we willing to change the energy system of the world that establishes power?”

The environmentalist explains that many countries “top them with time and postpone stocks”. In the case of Brazil, the country is able to maintain a renewable energy matrix.

“We made the decision there in the past of doing hydroelectric, betting on ethanol, because we had no dollar to explore oil. We went to explore oil later. The great truth is that Brazil needs to make decisions and decide how it wants to be in the future, ”says Izabella Teixeira.
