LAST UPDATE 21:42

The European Union (EU) is ready to impose additional sanctions on Russia as a result of its invasion of Ukraine, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday, but said they would not be formally adopted within a week, only “directions” would be given. by European leaders at the Summit.

“Restrictive measures continue to be an important part of our approach and we are ready to take additional (joint) measures with our partners,” he told reporters after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

“Russia’s aggressive war is a tectonic shift in European history,” Borrell said, adding that everyone was now convinced that Europe was in danger from a neighbor determined to go to war. The “Strategic Compass” includes clear timetables for strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities and filling “defense gaps” in the coming years, Borrell said, adding that the EU’s average defense spending should be significantly increased by the current 1.5% of GDP.

Finally, Josep Borrell said that there was a political agreement in the EU Council for additional arms assistance to Ukraine, amounting to 500 million euros.

At the same time, Josep Borrell stressed that Vladimir Putin is using the tools of refugees fleeing Ukraine in order to escape the Russian attack.
