Israeli troops have surrounded the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, the Israeli military said on Tuesday (05), as it seeks to complete its offensives against Hamas militants in the north of the territory.
Gaza’s largest camp has been hit by new Israeli strikes in recent days, following the end of a week-long lull in the conflict.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said it “operated against Hamas strongholds in Jabalia.
The IDF also announced that it “took control of the main military posts from which attacks on troops were carried out.”
Furthermore, Israel also stated that weapons and launchers were located “in civilian compounds” and that it “located and destroyed rockets found in the garden of a residence in the north of the Gaza Strip.”
Jabalia is a densely populated refugee camp established shortly after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were expelled from the territory encompassing the then newly created State of Israel, and were later denied return. . The camp is a populated and urbanized area, with houses, shops and apartment buildings squeezed together.
Israeli attacks that took place in October against Hamas commanders and the militant group’s infrastructure in the camp caused catastrophic damage and killed large numbers of people, according to witnesses and medical officials in the territory.
