Actor Jack Quaid, best known for his lead role in Amazon’s TV series “The Boys,” said he’s “inclined to agree” with those who call him a “nepo baby.”
The actor — whose parents are movie stars Meg Ryan (“City of Angels”) and Dennis Quaid (“The Parent Trap”) — spoke about the issue in an interview on The Daily Beast podcast earlier this week.
“I mean, no matter what I do, people are going to call attention to it,” he said of the “nepo baby” label.
“People have called me a ‘nepo baby.’ I’m inclined to agree. I’m an immensely privileged person, I got representation very early on, and that’s more than half the battle.”
“I knew the door was open for me in a lot of ways that it’s not open for a lot of actors,” he said of his background, adding that he tried to “work as hard as I could to prove that I deserve to walk through that door.”
Quaid’s father has even commented that his son wanted to follow his own path, without any help from his parents.
“My agent wanted to represent him and he was like, ‘No, I want to do it myself,’” the elder Quaid explained during a 2020 appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
“And then, of course, he gets his own agent and his first movie is ‘The Hunger Games.’”
His mother, Ryan, also chimed in on the “nepo baby” conversation in an interview with Glamour magazine last year. “Jack is really talented. He’s more of a natural than I’ll ever be,” she said of her son. “This nepo thing is so dismissive of his work ethic, his gifts, and how sensitive he is to the idea of his privilege.”
The podcast asked Quaid if he had ever considered following in the romantic comedy footsteps of his mother, who is also known for classics like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail.
“My mom is the undisputed queen of romantic comedies,” Quaid said. “I can’t just step into that space, it has to be right. It has to be something that feels different enough from what she’s done.”
