Jaguar, alligator and fish: Ibama seizes animal heads on display

The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) seized several heads of jaguars, jaguars, peccaries, alligators and other parts of wild animals available for sale in an illegal exhibition in Mato Grosso do Sul, last Tuesday- fair (19).

The agents carried out an inspection at the location based on a complaint received. Among the items on display were also found shark dental arches, marsh deer antlers and “trophies” of painted and golden fish heads.

The items were seized and the establishment received fines totaling R$24,000. In addition, fines of R$500 and R$5,000 were also imposed against animals that are not at risk of extinction.

According to the agency, the suspects will face justice for the crime.

The superintendent of Ibama in Mato Grosso do Sul, Joanice Lube Battilani, highlights that this type of operation aims to avoid heating up the supply and demand market, which also occurs with wildlife trafficking.

“The rarer an animal is, the greater the interest and price paid for it,” she explained.

Joanice added that this practice is also in line with the belief that some people believe that these types of objects serve as amulets and “bring protection and prosperity”.
